So I’ve come to realize that I hate grocery shopping. HATE it. Walking up and down the aisles shopping for one. Trying to figure out how I’m supposed to know what I’m going to want to eat later on the week. It’s just too much. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I can’t cook. Yep. I said it. I can’t cook. I can follow a recipe but I can’t cook. Let me explain.
Cooking to me is an art form. Someone who can cook is someone who can just pull a recipe and create a meal out of thin air. Someone who can make a delicious meal out of only 4 or 5 ingredients. I look through my pantry and I have just about every major spice you would season your fruit with along with the typical ingredients. But I’m never inspired or even know what to make or where to even begin. Not only that but cooking is a lot of work. Often times, I don’t decide to start cooking until I’m already hungry. And at that point, the last thing I want to do is spend 30 minutes pre-preparing a meal, another 30 minutes preparing it, and then another hour waiting for it to cook. Nope, that’s what Chili’s to go is for.
Back in September I decided that I would start making my own meals, thinking that it would be cheaper, and since I’m now a real grown up (grad student) I should start eating like a grown up. So I made my first meal that actually required preparing of grilled tilapia with lemon flavoring and bread crumbs along with grilled asparagus. The meal was delicious! I should have taken a picture of it. I probably did. But by October, I was back to soup and salad, lasagna or grabbing fast food on the way home from work.
Maybe one day I will seriously decide to learn how to cook and take lessons. Until then soup and salad and Chipotle it is.
